staircase as filigree light sculpture in an old farmer's house

Hotel

the old house had an annex that covered the façade and left no view to the west.

the transformation: The old annex with the low ceiling and then... the new light structure we put up - not only opening up the house to the pleasant afternoon light, but also revealing the beautiful classic farmhouse structure with timbers and fillings. The transparent volume contains the new kitchen. To the side and above are roofed terraces, something that is much appreciated in Switzerland's rainy climate.

much more clarity inside the house and roofed spaces

While the roof, slightly raised, rests on thin steel columns (H100mm), the new kitchen volume was made of wooden elements for optimal insulation.

Climbing up to the terrace, one reaches an additional apartment that thus takes advantage of the old unused volume.

where there used to be a dark staircase between walls, now stands a light sculpture.

we love to take advantage of the qualities of the materials. We replaced the walls with thin steel columns and a staircase in 10mm translucent Scobalit®, combined with 20mm black resin sheets. - These are strong and durable materials despite their thinness.

the classic structure revealed

by removing the annex, we reveal an old classic wooden facade with infill. In Switzerland it is called "Riegelbau". The next project, below, shows an even older example, from the 17th century.

In many cases we have combined the historical with something contemporary to match. - A dialogue of epochs.
